Vince Neil: Motley Crue "Nearing the End"

Bad news for Mötley Crüe fans: frontman Vince Neil says that band is close to calling it quits.

"I'm definitely nearing the end," he said.  "We're going to put out some new music next year and then it's our farewell tour -- we'll do the world one more time and then call it a day."

Neil notes that the band will give fans around the globe a number of chances to see the group perform one last time before they go their separate ways.  "Our farewell tour [will be like] 2014 or '15.  Tours last about two years. So to finish the world, you've got to do the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia...it takes some time."

The singer adds that just because the band is ending, that doesn’t mean that he’s retiring from music. "I'll continue to sing Mötley [songs] with my solo band and put out solo records and stuff and [bassist] Nikki [Sixx]'s got his radio show and [drummer] Tommy [Lee] wants to be a deejay, and so we'll see what happens."

KANYE WEST DROPS SOME SERIOUS KOIN TO GO TO KIM KARDASHIAN’S DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENTS.

Despite Kim Kardashian‘s divorce deposition admitting she hardly sees Kanye West, don’t be fooled into thinking he’s a deadbeat future-baby daddy.

Yeezy’s actually been spending serious dough — more than most of us make in a year — just to be with Kardashian for her doctor’s appointments for their imminent Kimye spawn.

TMZ reports that West, who’s been globetrotting promoting his fashion line and recording a new album, has made at least three trips via private jet to be with K.K. for checkups. The trips, from Paris to Los Angeles, cost a total of roughly $100,000.

‘Good Life’ indeed.

A source also revealed that West reaches out to Kardashian’s doctors in advance on his own to make sure he can fit her appointments into his own hectic schedule.

West reportedly also flew Kardashian to Paris multiple times on his private jet to be with him ahead of their baby’s birth, slated for July.

Whether or not he names his next album ‘I Am God,’ one thing’s pretty sure: He’s the father. And a pretty solid one so far.

‘STAR WARS’ ACTOR RICHARD LEPARMENTIER DEAD AT 66.

Richard LeParmentier, the actor who had a brief yet immensely memorable role in the original ‘Star Wars’ film, died at the age of 66 in Austin, Texas on April 16.
No cause of death was cited, but his publicist said his passing was completely unexpected.
Fans of ‘Star Wars’ will remember him as Admiral Motti, who insulted the Jedi religion and wound up the victim of Darth Vader’s infamous air-choke, with Vader spouting the famous line, “I find your lack of faith disturbing.”
The scene from the 1977 film was so iconic that it even recently started a photo craze known as Vadering.
After LeParmentier’s death, his three children released a statement reading:
At age 66, Richard Le Parmentier is one with the Force. We’re deeply grateful to the many devoted fans who have posted personal remembrances of our dad as a warm, genuine person with an unparalleled joie de vivre and gift for friendship (not to mention a mean petanque player).
To his fans and friends, his lines were the ultimate power in the universe. He absolutely loved traveling the world and meeting his friends and fellow ‘Star Wars’ fans.”

TAYLOR SWIFT LAUNCHES SPRING + SUMMER LINE OF KEDS.

Taylor Swift has expanded her partnership with Keds. Since both the singer and the shoes are American classics, it was only a matter of time before the relationship was furthered.

Swift, who has been knocking us dead on red carpets with her gown choices this year, debuted a limited edition, red-themed collection of footwear last fall to coincide with the release of her bazillion-seller ‘Red.’ She also issued another limited edition set of spring shoes, which are perfect for lounging dockside and feature cool graphics like anchors and her signature stamped on the inner soles.

Now, the singer is branding an entire range of the rounded tennis shoes for the spring and summer seasons. They feature cutesy graphics like flowers and polka dots, and other decidedly Swiftian prints. These look like kicks she would wear with her twinsets, cardis, full skirts and pearls. You can wear ‘em with cut-off jeans shorts, dresses or whatevs!

They are cute and totally wearable and won’t set you back, since they are super affordable at $50.

Which pair (or pairs) are you going to grab when they become available in May, PopCrushers? Which is your favorite design in this set of Taylor Swift x Keds?

’300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE’ DEBUTS EPIC, RAIN-SWEPT POSTER.

You might think Zack Snyder is keeping busy, what with post-production on ‘Man of Steel‘ and the latest trailer hitting today, but he broke a near six-month Twitter silence to tweet the debut of the first poster for ‘300: Rise of an Empire.’ And the image definitely makes it look like the last movie, and that it is proud of its producer.

Here’s that poster:

This came from Snyder’s Twitter — which he hasn’t been using much of late — though the poster likely debuted at CinemaCon, which is going on right now. But it’s not surprising that Snyder is front and center with this movie, as the film itself isn’t exactly chock-full of name players (we like Eva Green, but we doubt that’s what will get audiences in the door). But ’300′ also didn’t have many famous faces and it was a massive hit. Was it the trailer, shirtless Gerard Butler, speed ramping action, the comic or all of these things combined? Hard to say.
The new film comes from Noam Murro, who got his start in commercials, and has mostly been attached to sequels (though he made a little indie film called ‘Smart People’ in 2008), as he nearly directed ‘The Ring Two’ and ‘A Good Day to Die Hard.’ In both cases he appeared to dodge a bullet.
’300: Rise of an Empire’ opens August 2.

FIRST TRAILER AND POSTER FOR KEANU REEVES’ ‘MAN OF TAI CHI’ ARE HERE.

After the ‘Matrix’ trilogy, Keanu Reeves became synonymous with stylized martial arts goodness, so it’s no surprise that his directorial debut is all about tough men kicking the snot out of each other. The first trailer and poster for ‘Man of Tai Chi‘ have arrived and if you’re the kind of person who likes movies where shirtless men punch each other across rooms, you’re going to want to check ‘em out.

The trailer is barely official — it was used to help sell the film at the Beijing International Film Festival — but it gives us a glimpse of a movie that’s chock full of all kinds of martial arts action. The plot remains a little incomprehensible at this time (something about an underground ring of fighters or…something), but the trailer is all about choreographer Yuen Woo-ping’s and star Tiger Hu Chen’s killer movies. Well, it’s also about Reeves’ amazingly, lovably stilted line delivery.

‘Man of Tai Chi’ doesn’t have a North American release date yet, but sit tight. It’s hard to imagine this one not popping up here eventually.

NEW IMAGES FROM ‘THE HEAT’: SANDRA BULLOCK AND MELISSA MCCARTHY GET ROUGH.

There are few films coming out this summer that have us more excited than Paul Feig’s ‘The Heat,’ which looks like it’ll be a delightful shot to the arm of the buddy cop genre. Of course, a buddy cop movie is only as good as the actors playing those buddy cops, but a handful of new images from the film have arrived online and they make stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy look like the comedy duo to beat this year.

‘The Heat’ marks the second time that Feig and McCarthy have worked together (after the wonderful ‘Bridesmaids’) and if this outing has half of the heart and humor of their previous effort, it’ll still be a contender for the best comedy of the year. Although we’ve seen countless “mismatched cops are forced to work together and eventually overcome their differences and become good friends in time to save the day” movies, this is the first one starring two women as funny as Bullock and McCarthy.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Uptight and straight-laced, FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a methodical investigator with a reputation for excellence–and hyper-arrogance. Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), one of Boston P.D.’s “finest,” is foul-mouthed and has a very short fuse, and uses her gut instinct and street smarts to catch the most elusive criminals. Neither has ever had a partner, or a friend for that matter. When these two wildly incompatible law officers join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies.

‘The Heat’ arrives on June 28th. Check out the new images (which come courtesy of Collider) below!

NEW ‘AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2′ IMAGES OFFER OUR FIRST OFFICIAL LOOK AT JAMIE FOXX AND DANE DEHAAN.

Last week, we got our first unofficial look at Jamie Foxx in full make-up as the villainous Electro in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ Today, two new images have arrived to get fans chatting: we’ve got our first official image of Foxx and our first look at Dane DeHaan‘s Harry Osborn. Check them both out below.

After the reveal of the blue-skinned, hoodied and deformed Electro, this first official image of Foxx may be slightly underwhelming for some: it’s of his character, Maxwell Dillion, before his transformation into an electricity-manipulating supervillain. Lack of make-up aside, there’s plenty to take in here. First of all, Mr. Dillon seems to have a bit of a Spider-Man obsession (which certainly can’t be good). Secondly, Foxx seems to have done a spectacular job of unsexy-ing himself for the part.

Our first look at DeHaan’s Harry Osborne is also rather subdued, showing the son of Spider-Man’s greatest enemy looking sullen (and snappily dressed) as he gets into a car. We can’t make any snap judgments from a single image, but it’s obvious that DeHaan’s take on the character will be radically different than that of James Franco’s in the original ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy. In any case, we’re just excited to see the very talented DeHaan (who was simply incredible in ‘Chronicle’) get a chance at this much exposure.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is currently shooting and will be released on May 2nd, 2014.

MEGADETH’S DAVE MUSTAINE CONFIRMS DEVICE FOR 2013 GIGANTOUR TREK.

Megadeth are bringing their ‘Gigantour’ festival trek back in 2013 and frontman Dave Mustaine confirmed that David Draiman‘s new band Device will be part of the run this year.

The news came out as Mustaine was speaking with Syracuse DJ Joe D. on his ‘Saturday Night Scream‘ program on 95X. The conversation turned to the recent collaboration with Draiman on Megadeth’s upcoming album, ‘Super Collider.’ Mustaine explained, “[We] met when we did the [Rockstar Energy Drink] Mayhem Festival a couple of years ago. That was the year that my arm got blown out on the tour again and I finished the tour with just two fingers … I think that kind of impressed David a little bit. So we kind of talked a little bit and became friends.”

Mustaine said the fact he’d been using producer Johnny K. for his new album helped as the knob-turner had worked on some of Disturbed’s records. He recalls, “The record was done and I was over at his house listening to the new Device record. I said, ‘Hey, you know what?! Would you be interested in singing this part at the end of ‘Dance in the Rain’ … and Dave did it, and I’ve gotta tell you, I think that, knowing how the two artists sound, I don’t know that the other guy is even capable of touching the performance that Draiman did. So that was awesome for us. And I was so excited, I asked him to be on Gigantour this year.”

Mustaine says that while he’s fine with confirming Device, he’s holding the rest of the bands for Gigantour under wraps. But he adds, “I think [fans] are gonna be pretty stoked, because each one of the other bands on there, they’re new bands comprised of a person who was a major celebrity from a really large band that went on to do something new — another really good clue for you and your listeners.”

BREAKING BENJAMIN FRONTMAN BENJAMIN BURNLEY RETAINS RIGHTS TO BAND’S NAME.

Breaking Benjamin‘s lengthy layoff may be coming to an end, as court proceedings between frontman Benjamin Burnley and two of the band’s former members concerning the rights to use their moniker have concluded with the vocalist emerging victorious.

The band took an indefinite hiatus in 2010 while Burnley was dealing with an illness. Not long after, the band’s label released a greatest hits album featuring a newly remixed version of ‘Blow Me Away’ with special guest vocalist Valora. The album and single became a point of contention between Burnley and bassist Mark Klepaski and guitarist Aaron Fink, as the singer later revealed that the two members had unilaterally signed off on the album and song remix without his consent.

Both Klepaski and Fink were fired by Burnley and a legal battle ensued over the rights to the name. Meanwhile drummer Chad Szeliga, who had used the hiatus to join Black Label Society as a touring musician, remained on good terms with Burnley.

In a posting at the band’s website, the group’s current status was updated. It reads as follows:

The dispute between Benjamin Burnley, who is the sole founder, primary musician, singer and songwriter for the band Breaking Benjamin, and two of the band’s ex-members has been resolved. Benjamin Burnley retains his right to use his band name and Breaking Benjamin will continue.

Burnley added his own comments, stating:

I am pleased to finally put this matter behind me and focus on the future for Breaking Benjamin. I wish to express my never ending love and gratitude to the best fans in the world for their undying love and support. Words cannot express my love to you all! Thank you!!
- Benjamin Burnley

In a recent interview with Hardrock Haven, Szeliga hinted that there might be movement with Breaking Benjamin soon and he expected to be part of it. “I am just looking to get back in the studio with Breaking Benjamin,” stated the drummer. “Yes, I’m answering the question that everybody asks me every day … Breaking Benjamin is still together. We will definitely and hopefully be doing another record in the future!”

3 DOORS DOWN BASSIST TODD HARRELL ARRESTED + CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR HOMICIDE.

3 Doors Down bassist Todd Harrell was arrested late Friday night (April 19) in Nashville and charged with vehicular homicide following a car crash, according to TMZ.

Police state that Harrell was speeding when his vehicle clipped a pickup truck that proceeded to spin out of control, struck a guardrail and then traveled down an embankment, flipping in the process. According to the reports, the driver of the pickup was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. According to local News Channel 5, Harrell’s Cadillac struck a retaining wall and stopped about a quarter of a mile away.

Harrell, who was also arrested on DUI charges last year, allegedly showed signs of impairment during the field sobriety test. He also allegedly admitted to police that he had been drinking hard cider and taking the prescription painkiller Lortab as well as a Xanax.

According to TMZ’s report, the Davidson County Sheriff’s deputies claimed to have discovered a plastic bag in Harrell’s sock that contained more Xanax pills along with Oxycodone and Oxymorphone.

The bassist was charged with vehicular homicide and bringing a controlled substance into the jail. He’s being held on $100,000 bond.

3 Doors Down issued a statement following the arrest on their website. It reads:

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Howard Shoulders, Jr. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.

The group just announced a new leg of summer dates with Daughtry. It is not known how Harrell’s status will affect the July and August run.

ROB ZOMBIE: 'I Don't Really Think My Films Are That Gory' .

Metro.us recently conducted an interview with rocker-turned-filmmaker Rob Zombie. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Metro.us: You said with ["The Lords Of Salem"] you wanted to try something different. Did you mean different from the "Halloween" films or just in general?

Rob: Just in general. I felt like the last group of films I did were in the same wheelhouse. I just wanted to break out of that within the structure of what we were making. I hate that phrase "horror director." It sounds so limiting. I just want to make movies. That's why my next film isn't even remotely a horror or genre film.

Metro.us: "The Lords of Salem" had a lower budget than you've had recently. Was that the plan?

Rob: That was a freedom thing. Because after doing the two "Halloween" films, which were with Dimension Films — that's a very hands-on studio. So you're always fighting to retain some sense of what you're trying to do. But with this film I had complete control, contractually. That was the appeal. Working with a small budget is kind of a drag. But the other part was great.

Metro.us: This film is less gory than your other films, with a lower body count.

Rob: I don't really think my films are that gory. I think "Halloween II" is pretty violent, but it's not that gory. I'm not a fan of gore, necessarily. I think when things become too gory it just becomes cartoony — it becomes like a bloody Roadrunner cartoon. This one isn't that violent. It's not even that vulgar, in terms of the language. I tried to make it different. The art direction's a lot cleaner and sparser, more composed. It's the opposite of what I normally do.

The Stone Music Festival was inspired by a cult '70s biker film named "Stone". Released in 1974, the exploitation movie starred Ken Shorter as an undercover cop assigned to discover who is murdering members of an outlaw biker gang named the Gravediggers.

VAN HALEN had not been seen on a stage since last spring, but along with a handful of Japanese dates and the Australian gig, the band recently confirmed its first U.S. show of 2013. The Van Halen clan and David Lee Roth will close out the annual Rock USA festival, scheduled for July 17 through July 20 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

VAN HALEN backed out of 31 North American dates last summer, citing exhaustion, and then Eddie Van Halen was sidelined for four-to-six months after undergoing surgery for the inflammatory intestinal affliction diverticulitis.

Roth recently gave an interview to Rolling Stone in which he expressed his desire to work on fresh material with Eddie Van Halen and tour outside the U.S., saying, "We have an audience and we have a potential future in many, many places . . . I don't know where the VAN HALEN future lies aside from the States."

VOLBEAT's Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies Debuts #1 In Territories Across The Globe.

Volbeat's Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies is the #1 album in the band's home country of Denmark alongside Canada, Germany, Norway, Switzerland and Austria.  The new release saw a debut at #2 in Finland, #4 in the Netherlands and Sweden, and #9 in The United States.  Volbeat's Michael Poulsen shares, "This is amazing and something we almost can't believe. It's crazy for us to think we did that, but the most fantastic thing about it is we did it with the fans support and dedication to the band. Without your love for the band, this would not be possible. So thanks a lot dear Volbeat fans and listeners. The support you are giving us for our shows and records are something we're very proud of.  You people rock big time."
The April 9th release, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies is a record that’s rich with stories and characters woven throughout its lyrics.  Some are real – like the noble lady outlaw Pearl Hart, who held up a stagecoach to buy medicine for her dying mother, or Lola Montez, the erotic dancer with her infamous ‘Spider Dance,’ or Black Bart, the gentleman highwayman who wrote poems for the people he robbed.  Others are entirely fictional.  "The Nameless One" is a cautionary tale of dabbling in the dark arts, featuring the mysterious and sinister character of the title.  Elsewhere, "Room 24," featuring King Diamond, was inspired by a terrifying experience in a hotel room somewhere in the heart of America.

Since forming in Copenhagen in 2000, Volbeat has released five studio albums, and two live offerings,  that have turned the band into superstars, collecting platinum discs and prestigious awards making them one of the most talked about bands around the world.  Distilling the rebel spirits of metal, rockabilly, country & western and rock’n’roll into a gas-guzzling beast of a sound, they’ve drawn huge acclaim from music fans worldwide, and earned them the respect and admiration of such iconic musicians as James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich of Metallica (who invited them on tour in 2009), Lemmy and Danish metal legend King Diamond, Dave Mustaine, Hank III, Jon Schaefer, Social Distortion and Scott Ian.  And now Volbeat’s electrifying fifth album, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies, is about to secure them a seat at rock’s top table alongside those very same legends. It finds the core trio of Michael Poulsen (vocals/guitar), Anders Kjølholm (bass) and Jon Larsen (drums) joined by former Anthrax/The Damned Things guitarist Rob Caggiano, who produced the album with longtime Volbeat co-producer Jacob Hansen.

The band returns to the U.S. for leg two of the North American tour May 1 in Boston.  Direct support will be All That Remains, with Eye Empire opening on the band's non-festival dates.  In June, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies will be released in Japan, with confirmed appearances at the major festival Summer Sonic 2013 on 8/10 in Tokyo and 8/11 in Osaka.  Prior, the band begins a major European tour 5/25 in Jelling, Denmark that will travel through the U.K.., Eastern and Western Europe, and Scandinavia, with major festivals complimented by headline dates.  Planned U.S. May appearances include:

5/01     Boston, MA                                         House of Blues
5/02     Montclair, NJ                                       Wellmont Theatre

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: 10 Years of House of 1000 Corpses.

Time to get the candles a blowing folks! Thats’ right Rob Zombie’s DEBUT movie – House of 1000 Corpses – has reached it’s tenth birthday (April 11 2003).  This carefully crafted homage to B-Movie horrors and the Marx Brothers introduced fans to the Firefly’s – the bloodiest family this side of the tracks.  And lets not forget the delightful Baby Firefly, living and breathing via the delightful Sheri Moon Zombie and Captain Spaulding – brought to life by the brilliant Sid Haig.  To celebrate this decade birthday here is a look back by Brutal As Hell on 10 years of House of 1000 Corpses.  To read the article and let us know of YOUR memories of the film

“This Blood is Forever” – 10 Years of House of 1000 Corpses

By Kit Rathenar

It’s amazing what ten years can do. Everyone knows Rob Zombie the movie director by now. While his cinematic career hasn’t been hugely prolific by some standards, he’s got several notable titles under his belt – including the remake of Halloween – and whatever critical opinion may say of his movies, nobody would dream, today, of questioning his place in horror cinema history. He’s there, and everyone’s cool with that. Any horror buff can tell you who Rob Zombie is. Yeah, House of 1000 Corpses was his first movie…

Stop right there. Back the truck up. House of 1000 Corpses was… Rob Zombie’s first movie. Let me take you back with me to 2003; where to me and my friends at the time, that simple statement meant the world. We were a bunch of metalheads in our early twenties who’d come through our student days to the strains of songs like “Dragula”, “Superbeast”, and “Living Dead Girl” – huge, thundering industrial-metal anthems, all gravel and gasoline and blood on chrome. The rest of the world didn’t give a damn about Rob Zombie back then, but we knew who he was. A peerless showman and performer, the carnival barker of the devil’s own sideshow with a voice that could peel your skin back and a gift for tapping into the currents of classic American horror on a level so deep that even us Brits felt like we got it. Rob Zombie KNEW America’s twisted, mythic heart, and he knew his vintage horror and video nasties like few others. He took the fear of a kid who knew the boogeyman was real, braided it with the excitement of a teenager watching their first classic slasher or Universal Studios original, spiced them with a touch of grindhouse grime and strip-joint sparkle, and gave us the results as songs that went in through our ears and down our spines without ever seeming to touch our brains. He was the metal scene’s version of that one uncle you were kinda scared of but always went to his house on Hallowe’en anyway, because he had the best decorations and the most candy of anyone in the neighbourhood. Rob Zombie was THAT guy.

So when the word got round that our Uncle Rob had been allowed to make a full-length movie? You can imagine how excited we were. We knew what this man was capable of. We’d seen his stage shows, his videos, the pop-culture nightmares in his liner notes; we’d heard his songs, we knew how his mind worked. The idea of this diabolic genius being let loose in a movie studio was enough to make us damn near cream ourselves. And most of all, this was something of OURS; something from our own rejected, despised, outsider subculture that seemed to spend most of its time being blamed for murders and suicides, getting loose in the (comparative, anyway) mainstream. It’s worth remembering at this point that House of 1000 Corpses had already been put on the shelf once in 2000 by Universal Pictures, who were afraid it would receive an NC-17 rating; Rob Zombie had to buy the rights himself and reshoot bits of it to give us the film that, in 2003, we finally got. I was and am very grateful that this film didn’t get watered down for Universal’s sensibilities, and the critical panning that it got at the time didn’t trouble or deter me or anyone else I knew. We weren’t expecting anything that came from our corner of the world to be embraced with open arms by the mainstream. We were metal fans. We already knew how it felt to be sideshow freaks.

And that, right there, is what gives House of 1000 Corpses its unique magic. It’s B-movie horror made BY a B-movie monster. Rob Zombie starts from the classic narrative of a redneck-killers, backwoods-horror, Hills Have Eyes or Texas Chainsaw Massacre style staple but his sympathies are with his villains from the start, and he turns the deranged killers of the Firefly clan into three-dimensional individuals with concerns, emotions and quirks all their own. Sid Haig’s Captain Spaulding is a grumpy but magnificent old badass with lot more smarts than anyone would expect of a man who runs a gas station while dressed as a clown. Bill Moseley’s Otis is a genius, an artist, and a psychopath – someone you really wouldn’t want to meet on a deserted highway, but he’s got a fearsome charm and a smile that’s given plenty of otherwise sensible women some very strange ideas. Sheri Moon’s Baby is aggravating yet adorable; two-thirds space cadet, one-third damaged doll, selfish, sadistic and vicious and yet also just an overgrown little girl who loves her mom. I really don’t understand why people find fault with Moon’s acting so often, because her performance here is pitch-perfect in my eyes. Meanwhile Karen Black’s Ma Firefly is every inch the perfect mother and lady of the house, kind to her children, welcoming to guests, loving and protective – the fact that her devoted family are murdering maniacs and the guests are destined for oblivion is beside the point. Their logic may be warped, their ideas of fun perverse, and their appetites murderous, but they are never cardboard cutout psychos. Indeed, the role of cardboard cutouts is instead – quite deliberately, I think – left to the four victims whose only job is to give the real (anti)heroes something to chew. Bill, Jerry, Denise and Mary are little more than cliched ciphers, with no futures and little past worth bringing up. The villains are the real characters with the real ongoing lives, even if they are cartoonishly over the top; more human than human, you might say, to borrow a phrase.

But then again, the whole of this film is larger than life, scripted in strict accordance with the Rule of Cool and shot through a lens of greasy psychedelia to capture that kid-in-a-carnival-funhouse sense that this is a world where anything can happen and probably will. Indeed, one thing that I hoped for from House of 1000 Corpses when I first saw it was a film where everything really would happen; one that would make good on the nameless, titillating promises on which so much horror of previous eras didn’t deliver. I was raised on HP Lovecraft, I know how easy it is to create horror by simply declaring the true heart of the abomination to be “unspeakable” and shunting it off-camera, and I’m fond of that technique even if it has been abused beyond all reason by a great many no-budget movies. I’m quite happy to accept that it’s my job as reader or viewer to make up the truly eye-popping details that an author or director is forced to skip over for the sake of good taste, moral responsibility, or FX limitations – indeed, many films that do try to speak of the unspeakable find that they simply can’t live up to the shapeless evocations that are already in the audience’s heads. But if one man could make a movie that would whip back the curtain and show us a horror that would actually justify all the anticipatory chills and excitement? I had faith, back then in 2003, that Rob Zombie was that man.

And indeed if he failed, from my point of view it’s only because he created something both so mind-warpingly gorgeous and so comfortingly familiar to me that it almost wasn’t horrible at all. From that first moment when the camera pulled back to show the signboards for “Captain Spaulding’s Museum of Monsters and Madmen; Fried Chicken and Gasoline”, I felt at home in House of 1000 Corpses’ mad little world and that feeling has never left me. Shot like a music video, exaggerated to comic-book scale, this was a film that spoke my visual and emotional language perfectly and this is why I loved it then and love it now.

I love it too because for all that it is, yes, brutally and grotesquely gory in places, the gore is a servant to the story, not its master. It feels like we see more footage of the Firefly clan messing around, goofing off and playing mindgames with their prey than we do of anyone actually dying or being hurt. I’m not upset or shocked by the violence in House of 1000 Corpses because I don’t think Rob Zombie is either; he directs the bloodshed as though it’s a simple function of the narrative and characters, an intrinsic element of the universe he’s portraying rather than a deliberate eyepoke of “watch this, isn’t it horrible, aren’t we edgy, are you feeling sick yet?” The camera spends longer and lingers more appreciatively on Baby doing a song and dance number than it does on anyone getting tortured; although speaking of lingering cameras, you can’t talk about House of 1000 Corpses without tipping the hat to that legendary world’s-longest-pause before Otis puts a bullet through Deputy Naish’s head. As an ultimate moment of stillness and silence in a film that’s otherwise a constant barrage of colour and noise, it’s the perfect device to make a single, simple bullet feel like the end of the world. It’s a solitary little touch of manifest creative discipline that says “I could’ve made a whole film like this. I CHOSE not to.” And I love that.

I don’t care that House of 1000 Corpses is cartoonish, unrealistic and utterly implausible. I’ve seen enough “realistic”, “gritty” horror to last me a lifetime. I love it because it’s a carnival madhouse of a film whose director wasn’t afraid to fill it to the brim willy-nilly with everything that he loved and knew his pre-existing fans shared his love for, instead of sacrificing his roots to try and crack a new market. When it came out, House of 1000 Corpses was called too violent, too disgusting, too sick. Ten years after the fact, we’re buried in movies that offer us far more unpleasantness for far less character, fun, or charisma. By contrast to currently prevailing trends this movie feels less like a visit to the slaughterhouse and more like walking into the noise and light and warmth of a party filled with familiar, friendly faces. Okay, so some of those faces are wearing man-skin masks and you don’t even want to know what’s in the punch, but even knowing the hazards, it still feels like home. This is the House, come on in…

Will the Metallica table help pinball “ride the lightning” to relevance? Stern's new offering hopes to extend pinball past the "End of the Line"

It wasn't that long ago that pinball seemed like it might be heading for that big drain in the sky. Even with the stealth rebirth of the arcade generating new interest, good luck finding a pinball machine instead of a redemption game that spits out tickets good for some crappy toy. If you did happen upon a pinball cabinet, the chances of it being in playable shape were often iffy at best.

Manufacturers saw the writing on the wall and began to bail out of the game. Capcom quit right before it was going to release its much-hyped Big Bang Bar table. Electronic gaming company Williams decided there was more money to be had making slot machines. Stern rose from the ashes of Data East and Sega and declared itself the last surviving maker of pinball machines.

Yet over the past couple of years there's been a bit of a resurgence. Interest in pinball is growing again. Stern can't claim the title of sole manufacturer anymore. Jersey Jack's Wizard of Oz table is just now starting to ship. Small boutique pinball tables, like Skit-B's Predator, are springing up to do limited runs. Headquarters Beercade in Chicago is opening a dedicated pinball room with up to 25 machines. It's still a niche market, but it's one that's looking vibrant again.

Stern has tried to capitalize on the growing fondness for the silver ball by releasing its tables in more expensive "premium" and "limited edition" models, aimed straight at a growing home and collector market. After having a hit with its AC/DC table based on the Australian hard rock band, it's looking for another win with a pinball machine based on metal stalwarts Metallica.

Longtime readers may recall our story about the first Metallica pinball table, a custom one-off based on a Williams Earthshaker. Stern and the band definitely remembered, because the artist behind that one, "Dirty" Donny Gillies, has returned for the mass market version. Licensed themes seem to be here to stay—no one wants to risk an original theme in this smaller market—but it's a breath of fresh air to see original hand-drawn art on a pinball table again instead of photoshopped PR stills.

Table designer John Borg is behind the Metallica layout. Borg is no stranger to pinball, having designed many of Data East's better tables such as Jurassic Park, Tales from the Crypt, and Guns N' Roses, as well as well-received Stern tables like Tron: Legacy and Iron Man.

Just as important in a modern table as the layout is the code, which for Metallica was led by the legendary Lyman Sheats. Sheats earned that legendary status from his time at Williams, where among other tables he programmed the trifecta of Monster Bash, Attack from Mars, and Medieval Madness. Even worn out versions of those three tables often sell for north of $10,000 each on the collector's market, due in no small part to the rules and software design. Sheats was also behind Stern's AC/DC table, the success of which was probably no small factor behind the company green-lighting Metallica.

A well-known license that has more than the temporary staying power of a movie, an experienced team of designers, and a return to a compelling visual package: is all that enough to put pinball back on the map? Probably not, and the prices of a modern table won't help, but it could be another sign of pinball's growing relevance even in the age of ninety-nine cent mobile gaming and high-powered PCs and consoles. There's something about manipulating a physical ball that's still compelling. It's something you just can't get on a screen.

Stern distributors and dealers are ready to take your order now if you've got the desire and the cash. The models break down like this, though you can probably score an under-MSRP deal with a little dealer hunting:

Pro Version: $4,995
Premium Version: $6,995
Limited Edition Master of Puppets Version: $7,595

For Metallica fans, the track list leans pretty heavily on older, classic material, and is as follows:

Kill Em All
Seek and Destroy

Ride The Lightning
Creeping Death
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Fade To Black

Master of Puppets
Master of Puppets
Battery

And Justice For All
One

Black Album
Enter Sandman
Sad But True
Unforgiven

Reload
Fuel

Death Magnetic
End of the Line

If we can get a hold of one of the Metallica tables from Stern we'll do the first-ever pinball review on ITN, but we'll have to see how the ball rolls on that one. Do you have pinball stories, new or old, to share? Put them in the comments!
